Working plan for regulated recyclable waste on carbon footprint calculation

For more and more people asked for environmental friendly products, that’s why building the capability of calculating carbon footprint of products is the main goal of government and enterprises, especially the benefit from communicating the social responsibility of carbon reduction information of products to consumers. This plan was to cope with the shortage of carbon footprint (CFP) of material that enterprises in Taiwan needed to calculate CFP of their products. The Recycling plants subsidized by Environmental Protection Administration Recycling Fund Management Board, produced recycled material. The Recycling plants should provide the CFP of the recycled material. It’s the required information for calculating the CFP of Regenerated industrial materials. This was a two-year plan. The purpose in the first year was to build the foundation: Unified the calculating scope of 13 kinds(33 items) regulated recyclable waste; identified 45 different recycled material and their names; built the CFP calculation processes of waste electronic, electric appliances and IT equipment; established the product category rule of recycled material of waste electronic, electric appliances and IT equipment; fulfilled 15 different CFPs of recycled material and gained the difficulty in the process of CFP inventory; handled 3 CFP training courses and 1 extra discussion for delivery CFP of product to EPA’s database. The second year’s work followed the first year’s content but diffusion to more recycling plant: established the standard operating procedures of inventory for waste electronic, electric appliances and IT equipment; fulfilled the CFP of recycled material of the other 5 plants and proposed the carbon reduction suggestion; calculated CFP of the 6 plants’ recycled material by weighting their proportion of its weight and got the weighted mean value; the mean value of the 15 CFP of recycled material qualified by EPA as the highest quality and announced on CFP calculating service platform; handled 3 CFP practical training courses. All the tasks were all fulfilled as planed and in line with the requirements. The value of the 15 CFP of recycled material are(unit: kgCO2e/kg) recycled iron scrap (0.125), recycled copper scrap (0.107), recycled aluminum scrap (0.148), recycled plastic scrap (0.132), recycled glass scrap (0.120), recycled funnel glass scrap(CRT) (0.098), recycled CFC-11(Activated carbon method) (6.385), recycled CFC-11(Liquid nitrogen method) (16.039), recycled CFC-12 (0.901), recycled HCFC-22 (0.484), recycled Lubricants (0.096), recycled Materials pending for further treatment (0.117), recycled iron scrap from gas compressor or motor (extended process)(0.152), recycled copper scrap from gas compressor or motor (extended process)(0.144), recycled aluminum scrap from gas compressor or motor (extended process)(0.150). Comparing to the CFP(0.12 kgCO2e/kg) of similar recycled material(iron scrap, copper scrap, aluminum scrap, plastic scrap) from Fukuoka(Japan) is very close.
